Born in Komagane City, Nagano Prefecture.
After graduating from the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts, he worked as an instructor at the Suidobata Academy of Fine Arts, then took up a post at Takaoka National College (now the University of Toyama) as a teacher specializing in wooden crafts in the Department of Industrial Crafts. In 1996, he became an assistant professor, and in 2003 he became a full professor. And he is an emeritus professor of the University of Toyama since 2017.
In 2017, he retired from the University of Toyama, and the same year, he became the official representative of By Hand Wood Workshop.
In addition to his creative artist activities, he draws on a broad variety of traces of the past as sources for ideas, with academic research built around themes such as human movement and technique, and people’s relationships with their working environments.
